Boundaries
Everything discussed in therapy sessions is kept in the strictest confidence within the context of supervision. What this means is that, as part of their professional ethics, including that of UKCP registration, therapists are required to regularly discuss their work with a clinical supervisor. This is so therapists can best serve their client. Still, therapists will not disclose the client’s full name or anything identifying. The only exceptions, where confidentiality would be breached are:
-
If the therapist considered the client at risk of harm to themselves or others, which would only be in extreme circumstances, and the therapist would always try to discuss such action with the client first;
-
If the therapist were ordered by law.
The client may wish to let their general practitioner / family doctor know that they are in psychotherapy. In any case, the therapist will store the client’s doctor’s contact details just in case of an emergency (first exception above).
The client will not attend sessions under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
